IAL Hall of Fame

Since the IAL has a long history, we decided in 1995 to establish a Hall of Fame to distinguish those players who have placed themselves head and shoulders above the rest.  In 1996, we voted in the the charter members of the Illowa APBA League Hall of Fame.  We have since had an annual ballot.  Worthy players who have been retired for one year are eligible.

Below are the fourteen players and one manager who are current members of the IAL Hall of Fame.  Click on their name to see their lifetime Illowa APBA League statistics.

Evans always seemed to put in a solid year, EVERY year.  As a result, he is one seven IAL hitters to have 1200 runs and 1200 rbis.  His 354 homeruns rank 16th on the all time list.

Another Champion mainstay, Hershiser ranks 3rd in wins with 220.  He also ranks 9th on the ERA list with 3.56.  His 23-7 record in 1990 was a big reason the Chicago Champions were indeed the IAL Champions that year.

The one word to use to describe Mark McGwire’s career is magical.  Drafted by the Twin City Thunderchickens in 1988, Mark hit 54 homeruns (a rookie record) and drove in 166 runs in addition to hitting .314 and scoring 122 runs.

Mark McGwire’s most productive year was probably 1999 when everything seemed to go right.  McGwire had a monster year.  He entered the last game of the season tied with Rafael Palmeiro for the IAL single season record of homeruns with 69.  It wasn’t until McGwire’s last at-bat of the season did he break the record.  In addition, McGwire had career highs in runs (138), rbis (174), and walks (152). The Twin City Thunderchickens were spirited away to victory thanks to McGwire.  The T-chix placed second that year and went on to win the World Series.

It would seem difficult to repeat the excitement of 1999’s homerun race but McGwire didn’t disappoint in 2000.  Once again, he entered game 162 tied with the record he had set the year prior.  And once again, dramatics prevailed as he waited until his very last at-bat of the season to break his own record.  That record stands today.  McGwire also banged out 159 rbis to go with his 71 homeruns.  In 2002, McGwire hit a homerun in his last at-bat of his career.

Mark McGwire finished with 591 career homeruns, second all-time.  He collected 1436 rbis (6th), 1162 walks (4th) and finished with a .592 slugging percentage (3rd).

Mr "66".  For years, Rice held the single season for homeruns when he hit 66 in 1979.  He also had 125 rbis and 129 runs that year.  He was partially responsible for the Chicago Champions' first place finish in 1984 when he hit 59 homeruns with an amazing 154 rbis with 139 runs scored.
